UNDERSTAND THAT EVERY CHILD IS UNIQUE AND SPECIAL

The children across the United States represent every racial and religious background and possible combination of heritage and nationality. They speak every language and dialect found around the world, regardless of the number of generations their families have been living in the United States. Children live in cities, suburbs, small towns, and rural settings; they live in houses, apartments, condos, trailer houses, and on farms.

They have all kinds of abilities, needs, and interests; they learn and express their learning in many different ways (Robins, Lindsey, Lindsey, & Terrell, 2002; Spinelli, 2002; Tomlinson, 1999). They may be well or sick, able or disabled. They wear all kinds of clothing, eat all kinds of foods, travel by all kinds of transportation, and play all kinds of games. Today’s children may be highly involved in academics, sports, music, technology, community groups, or social events; they may prefer the company of a few close friends and individual pursuits. All of these characteristics greatly influence children’s understanding of themselves, their interactions with one another, and their views of society.

During their formative years, children form a sense of normalcy. How they were raised prior to attending school establishes the basis for their lifelong values and personal beliefs. Most elementary school children enter school thinking that other children and families are just like them and their families. Naïvely, children expect their teachers and the school to continue the kinds of support and reinforcement that they have experienced during their preschool years, and they are surprised when they discover that other families are unlike their own. As you realize that children come from every kind of background and home that is possible, you recognize the importance of providing a sense of stability and acceptance for all children in your classrooms.
